The Last Emporium

Before it was published in 1997 as The Politics of Disappearance, scholar Ackbar Abbas had tentatively titled what was to become his seminal work and story of Hong Kong The Last Emporium.

The Emporium is in fact a journey, and the stories of this fragrant harbour, even its colonial moniker as the ‘Pearl of the East’, have always been attached to the ephemeral, to that which nears but that also leaves—to its own non-sovereignty. This manifestation of The Last Emporium thus engages the shores of the diasporic through the flows of affect and economy, carrying the shards of the ‘mutant political entity’ outward to other cities and unknown futures. It is an expanded objecthood of the material—a research, dialogue, and storytelling narrated in the form of the epistolary address.

Collaged vessels have been cached at specific locations in Hong Kong, Singapore, Shenzhen, Cabanatuan City, Nijmegen and Dallas, for you and others to discover and carry forward, and further serving as keys enabling access to the Emporium’s repository of documents and correspondence. If you have a key pass, please log in to continue their journeys.
